<p>‘Susto’ is believed by the patients to change the bodily state, leaving the person more vulnerable to several illnesses including cancer (Moon, 1984) and diabetes (Poss and Jezewski, 2002). Studies have shown ‘susto’ to be significantly associated with stress and depressive symptoms (Weller et al., 2008). “Espante” has many of these manifestations but does not seem to be so serious because it has not been associated with such bad outcomes.
